Pictures taken with HLG chosen for tone mode on cameras that support tone-mode selection have a high dynamic range (HDR). The technology used supports a wider range of tones (dynamic range) and is distinct from multi-exposure HDR capture, a high-dynamic-range imaging (HDRI) technique that blends multiple still photographs shot at different exposures. Pictures taken with SDR chosen for tone mode use the existing standard dynamic range (SDR).
Pictures taken with SDR selected for tone mode can be recorded in NEF (RAW) or JPEG.
Pictures taken with HLG selected for tone mode can be recorded in NEF (RAW) or HEIF.
NEF (RAW) pictures can be shot with either SDR or HLG selected for tone mode. The file extension in both cases is “.nef” but the dynamic range differs.
